Straits Area Community Foundation Funds
SACF holds over 40 funds that directly benefit the residents of Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City. You can make a gift to any of these funds online, or by mailing a check payable to Straits Area Community Foundation. Simply indicate on the memo line of your check the fund to which you would like to contribute, and mail it to P.O. Box 495, Alpena, MI 49707.
Donor Advised Funds
Cheboygan Area Arts Council Fund - This endowment fund is devoted to projects, persons, or organizations which or whom serve to enhance, improve, or increase the arts and humanities opportunities to the residents and visitors of Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City. Grants are made at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the Cheboygan Area Arts Council.
Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce Education Fund - This endowment fund was established to provide funding for Cheboygan area youth education programs, individual scholarships and Chamber member education seminars, conferences and series. Recommendations for grants from this fund will be made by the Board of Directors of the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce.
Community Memorial Hospital Fund - This endowment fund was created by the Community Memorial Hospital to be used for the hospital's general health care activities. Recommendations for grants from this fund will be made by the Community Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees.
Mackinaw City Women's Club
- This endowment fund was started for the purpose of distributing scholarships and /or other projects as from time to time may be recommended by an Advisory Committee consisting of the Mackinaw Women's Club Scholarship Committee.
Mackinaw Youth Hockey Fund - This endowment fund, started by an anonymous donor, was designed to specifically help children who are unable to cover the cost of their hockey fees as determined appropriate by the Mackinaw City Hockey Association Board. Grants from the fund may be distributed for multiple youth applicants; however, all applicants and recipients must be kept confidential.
Music in Mackinaw Endowment Fund - This endowment fund was created to assist with the expenses of the Annual "Music in Mackinaw" program. The proceeds from the fund are to be paid annually to the Greater Mackinaw Area Chamber of Commerce to administer the program. The donor of this fund will match every $4,000 in contributions with $1,000.
The Pepper Family Fund - This non-endowed fund was established to fund programs for purposes that are religious, charitable, scientific, literary, cultural or education, or to foster national or international amateur sports competition (but only if no part of such activities involve the provision of athletic equipment unless the provision of the athletic facilities or equipment is by a qualified sports organization) or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals.
Shepler Tourism Fund - This endowment fund was established to benefit projects, causes, or persons which serve to enhance, improve, or increase tourism opportunities for visitors to Cheboygan County and Wawatam Township in Emmet County. Grants are made at the discretion of the Board of Directors of Shepler, Inc.
Scheerens Family Fund - This endowment fund is to be used for gift matching for the St. Anthony's Church Endowment Fund and the Music in Mackinaw Fund.
Designated Funds
Bois Blanc Island General Fund - This endowment fund was created exclusively to support the charitable, educational, cultural, recreational, environmental and social welfare needs of the people of Bois Blanc Island toward the end of making the island a safer and more enjoyable community for all.
Bois Blanc Island Operating Fund - This non-endowed fund is used exclusively for the operating expenses of the Bois Blanc Island Foundation.
Friends of Inland Lakes Schools Fund - This non-endowmed fund will be used to pay for the needs of the Inland Lakes Schools that are not covered by other funding.
Friends of Mullet Lake - This endowment fund was established to benefit the "Rails to Trails" projects near Mullet Lake in Cheboygan County.
Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum Endowment Fund - This endowment fund will help to support the retired Icebreaker Mackinaw, which is now a maritime museum moored in Mackinaw City.
Mackinaw Area Public Library Fund - This endowment fund was established to benefit the Mackinaw Area Public Library. Grants will be made at the discretion of the Library Board.
St. Anthony's Church Endowment Fund - This endowment fund was started to assist with the needs of St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Mackinaw City, Michigan, and for the religious needs of the Mackinaw City Catholic Community. The donor of this fund will match every $4,000 in contributions with $1,000.
Straits Area Administrative Endowment Fund - This endowment fund was created to help meet the future needs for SACF's operating expenses. Disbursement is made annually.
Straits Area YAC Expense Fund - This non-endowed fund is used for the operating expenses for the Straits Area Youth Advisory Council.
Field of Interest Funds
Straits Area Tobacco Partnership Fund - This endowment fund was created when the State of Michigan won its legal battle against the tobacco industry. Grants from this fund are awarded in conjunction with Common Grants for programs promoting health for youth under the age of 18 and/or senior citizens.
Straits Area Youth Fund - A portion of the income from this endowment fund donated by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation is used by the SACF Youth Advisory Council to teach young people about philanthropy and volunteerism by funding grants which benefit the youth in Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City.
Agency Funds
Cheboygan Area Public Library Fund - This is a non-permanent fund, however, the board of the Cheboygan Area Public Library plans to leave it to grow and treat it like a permanent endowment. It will be used to support the Cheboygan Area Public Library.
Cheboygan Senior Center Endowment Fund
- This endowment fund was created to assist the Cheboygan County Council on Aging with any programs, projects, or needs as deemed appropriate by the its board.
Mackinaw Area Historical Society Fund - This endowment fund was established to assist with the programs, projects, and needs of the Mackinaw Area Historical Society.
St. Helena Lighthouse Endowment Fund - This endowment fund was started by the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association for the maintenance and preservation of the St. Helena Lighthouse, and for educating the public about the lighthouse.
Scholarship Funds
Alberta Schappacher Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established for the purpose of granting scholarships to graduates of Mackinaw City High School for further education. Grants will be made on the recommendation of the Advisory Board for the Alberta Schappacher Scholarship Fund
Audie's Open Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established for the purpose of granting scholarships to graduates of Mackinaw City High School to attend the college, university, or trade school of their choice. Selection of recipients will be made by the Board of Directors of Jaggi, Inc.
Charles and Ruth Norton Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established for the purpose of granting scholarships to graduates of Wolverine High School to attend the college, university, or trade school of their choice. Grants are made at the discretions of the Scholarship Committee of Wolverine High School.
Cheboygan High School Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established for the purpose of granting scholarships to graduates of Cheboygan High School who have maintained a GPA of 2.8 or higher to further their education. Grants will be made at the discretion of the SACF Scholarship Committee.
Cheboygan Rotary Club Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established for the purpose of granting scholarships to high school graduates to attend the college, university or trade school of their choice. Selections of recipients are made by the Cheboygan Rotary Club Board of Directors.
Doris Reeves Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established for the purpose of granting scholarships to graduates of Wolverine High School to attend the college, university, or trade school of their choice. Grants are made at the discretions of the Scholarship Committee of Wolverine High School.
Douglas Jackson Memorial Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was created to assist with college costs for a senior or seniors graduating from Cheboygan High School. The recipient(s) must have a cumulative G.P.A. of at lest 3.0, and have earned a Varsity letter in Soccer.
Great Lakes Captains Association, Inc. - This endowment fund was created to provide financial aid in the form of scholarships to be awarded annually to individuals meeting the requirements of the Board of Directors of the Great Lakes Captains Association, Inc., and to provide charitable grants to maritime related organizations as designated and deemed appropriate by the Board of Directors of the Great Lakes Captains Association, Inc.
Kiwanis of Cheboygan Scholarship Fund - This donor advised endowment fund was established for the educational needs of schools and/or students of the Cheboygan area. Grants will be made at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee of the Kiwanis Club of Cheboygan.
Mackinaw City High School Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established for the purpose of granting scholarships to graduates of Mackinaw City High School for further education. Selection of recipients is done by the Mackinaw City High School Scholarship Committee.
Mackinaw High School Alumni New Career Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established to build a fund to help graduates of Mackinaw High School who have the need to go back to school to change or upgrade their careers.
Mackinaw Memorial Parade, Inc. Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established to provide scholarships to students graduating from Mackinaw City High School, Cheboygan High School, and St. Ignace High School.
Mattson and Sons Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established for the purpose of granting scholarships to graduates of Wolverine High School to attend the college, university, or trade school of their choice. Grants are made at the discretions of the Scholarship Committee of Wolverine High School.
Wolverine Education Association Scholarship Fund - This endowment fund was established for the purpose of granting scholarships to graduates of Wolverine High School to attend the college, university, or trade school of their choice. Grants are made at the discretions of the Scholarship Committee of Wolverine High School.
Unrestricted Funds
Straits Area Affiliate Administrative Fund - This non-endowed fund is used for the operating expenses of the Straits Area Community Foundation.
Straits Area Community Needs Endowment Fund - This endowment fund is used to make grants to non-profits for the benefit of the residents of Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City at the discretion of the SACF Board.
