Why $400?
The State of Michigan provides a tax incentive through the Michigan Community Foundation Tax Credit to encourage donors to give to permanent endowment funds. For a married couple filing jointly, a maximum credit of $200 may be received on a gift of $400 or more. For a single person, the maximum credit is $100 on a gift of $200 or more. These gifts are also eligible for any federal charitable deductions you may receive if you itemize on your returns. *The Michigan Community Foundation Tax Credit will end on December 31, 2011 as a result of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder's new State budget. Gifts made before that date will still be eligible for the credit.
*For purposes of The 400 Club, members are those who annually give $400 or more, regardless of their tax filing status.
